The Dean Family

This photo of the Dean family home in Old Orchard Beach, Maine was taken in 1906. It was at Hillside and Ocean Avenue. Unfortunately, it is no longer there, though the house just behind it is. They lived here from 1900 until 1907 or so, when they moved to the west coast to help Almira during her pregnancy.

Katherine Dean, my mother's maternal grandmother, was originally from Maine. Her father's name was Daniel LeBetta Dean and he was an itinerant non-denominational minister, blacksmith, and salesman according to various records. Katherine's mother's name was Harriet Anna Sawyer. Daniel and Harriet had daughters, Inez, Alice Gertrude, and Almira in addition to Katherine. According to the 1900 census, Harriet had given birth to five children, but only four were living at the time of that census. Here's a copy of the 1900 census that lists their familily members as of that date, starting on line 68. Put your cursor in the middle of the image and click it one time to enlarge it.

In Tacoma, the Deans lived in an apartment building across from the entrance to Stadium High School, where a school district building is now, and they lived with William and Katherine Callahan at 613 South Oakes Street, in Tacoma. They are all shown as living there on the 1930 US census. I'll find an image of that when I get a chance and post it here.

This is the Dean family of Old Orchard Beach, Maine. I don't know if this photo was taken in a studio, a friend's home, or if this was their home.
